Practice Nurses are a core part of the practice team providing vital services in health promotion, chronic disease management and the prevention of illnesses. The roles of nurses include: providing clinical services, coordinating patient care, advocating on behalf of patients, liaising with community groups and helping patients to navigate the health system.

impetus™ offers a range of services to support general practice nursing including: 

  • Practice Incentive Payments (PIP)
  • Professional development through educational workshops and seminars
  • Information and resources
  • Recruitment of practice nurses
  • Utilisation of practice nurses
  • Orientation for new nurses
  • Peer support through Practice Nurse Network
  • Chronic disease management, immunisation, vaccine fridge management, health promotion and prevention
  • Training through Nursing in General Practice Program

The Practice Nurses’ Network has been in operation since 1998. The Network provides a regular forum to discuss common issues and to share expertise. Meetings are quarterly. The focus of each meeting is decided from input by nurses. All practice nurses are welcome to attend the meetings.

The orientation program for new practice nurses includes a practice visit and New Practice Nurse Orientation Kit. The Kit is readily available on request; bookings must be made for a practice visit.

Professional development and clinical enhancement opportunities include Triage, Infection Control, First Aid and CPR courses.  Other education and scholarship opportunities, offered by RCNA, APNA, GPV, ANMC and ANF are advertised in Advance.
